UWA Notches 9-5 Win over William Carey

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team posted eight consecutive runs to capture a 9-5 win over William Carey on Wednesday afternoon at Tartt Field. UWA improved to 5-2 on the season.

Douglas Frazier and Colin McKeen each recorded three RBI in the contest with Kevin Deese logging two RBI. Frazier and McKeen each went 2-for-4 at the plate while Deese logged three hits in five trips to the dish.

After a 1-1 outing through three innings, UWA exploded for five runs in the next three innings to take a 6-1 lead. Deese broke the 1-all deadlock with a leadoff homerun in the fourth inning. The Tigers added two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning to extend the margin to 6-1. With two outs and bases loaded, Frazier hit a 3-2 pitch up the middle to score McKeen and Marc Mahler for the two runs in the sixth inning. Frazier drove in Sam McCormack for the first run of the fifth inning and later scored on a throwing error to cap the scoring in the inning.

After WCU (5-4) added a run in the seventh, McKeen hit a three-run homerun over the right field wall to extend the Red and White's lead to 9-2. The homer was the first for McKeen in a UWA uniform.

Dom Sapp (1-0) logged his first win of the season with two innings on the mound. Sapp allowed one hit with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.

The Crusaders added two runs in the eighth and placed one more on the board in the ninth to cut the margin to the 9-5 final.

West Alabama returns to action on Friday, Feb. 19 as UWA travels to Boca Raton, Fla. for a four game series with defending NCAA Division II National Champion Lynn University. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CST.
