BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of West Alabama baseball team pasted 13 runs on the board as UWA (6-2) knocked off Lynn University 13-4 in the first of a four game series. The 13 runs ties a season-high for the Tigers.
The Red and White posted a season-high nine doubles in the outing en route to18 hits in the contest. Brian Simone, Kevin Deese and Colin McKeen each collected a pair of doubles in the outing as McKeen drove in three RBI in the affair along with Dallas Rogers.
Kasey Nafzger logged seven innings on the mound in the win. The Westerville, Ohio-senior recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts while scattering all four LU runs on five hits. The 10 K's were two short of the right-handers career-high. Jason Howell tossed the final two innings of the series opening affair with two punch outs and a walk.
After the Fighting Knights (4-3-1) tied the game at 4-all, UWA tallied nine runs in the final three innings to hand LU starter Dan Wright (2-1) his first loss since Mar. 27, 2009, a 10-5 loss to Tampa.
Deese broke the tie in the seventh as he doubled to left center to plate Simone, who drew a one out walk. Deese later scored on a McKeen sac fly to center field after he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Rogers gave the Red and White a three run lead with a double to right center in the eighth, plating Sam McCormack. Rogers later scored on a Lige Mitchell one out, single to left field.
UWA pasted five runs on the board in the ninth. After McKeen and Clint Alford scored earlier in the inning, Frazier roped a two out, double down the left field line to score McCormack. Mitchell followed with a single to center pushing Frazier across the dish. Mitchell scored on a Simone double to left center to conclude the scoring.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 20 as UWA and Lynn will meet in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. CST. Sunday's single contest scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. CST start. Live stats and audio of the games will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
