BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of West Alabama baseball posted nine runs in their final two at bats to take the final game of the weekend series, 11-6, from Lynn on Sunday afternoon. UWA (8-3) took three of the four games to clinch the four game series.
After UWA battled back from 6-2 to tie the game at 6-all in the eighth, the Tigers pounded out five runs in the ninth to secure the win. Bryan Mason broke the deadlock with a single to left field to score Jay Jennings. Douglas Frazier followed with a single up the middle to plate Mason and Clint Brown, putting the Red and White up 9-6. Brian Simone plated the final two runs of the contest with a double to right center that pushed Frazier and
Deon Williams across the dish. The two RBI in the ninth were the fourth RBI for the Amherstburg, Ontario native as he tied the game in the eighth with a single that scored Williams and Dallas Rogers.
Mason began the rally in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Clint Alford, cutting the Fighting Knights lead in half. Williams later followed with a single through the left side to score Brown, setting up Simone's two RBI, single to tie the outing.
Dom Sapp (2-0) pitched three innings in relief to garner the win. The Geneva, N.Y.-senior allowed just three hits in the effort with a pair of strikeouts and a walk. UWA starter Cory Lopez tossed five innings on the bump, surrendering six runs on eight hits with four KOs and two walks. Jason Howell pitched the final inning of work and carded two strikeouts.
UWA plated the first run of the affair in the second inning as Frazier singled up the middle to score Mason. Lynn came back in the bottom of the third to the tie game. LU took the lead in the fourth inning with a pair of runs but saw the Red and White plate a run in the top of the fifth to pull within a run. The Blue and White answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to extend its lead to 6-2.
West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 27 as UWA hosts Delta State in a three-game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on FOX Sports, WSLY 104.9 FM. The radio broadcast along with live stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
