LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Delta State on Sunday afternoon at Tartt Field. The Statesmen's (11-2-1) win finished off a weekend sweep of the Tigers (8-6), the first since 2007.
Trailing 2-0 after 5 ½ innings, UWA tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Brian Simone lifted a two-run homer out over right field. The homer was the second of the season for the Amherstburg, Ontario native as he scored Douglas Frazier, who led the inning off with a single to left field.
DSU answered with a run in the seventh as Michael Vinson drove in Michael Niemann with single to right field. The Green and White added another run in the top of the ninth as Brancy Cummins scored on a Patrick Taylor sacrifice fly to center field. Cummins entered the contest as a pinch runner for Michael Vinson, who hit a one out triple earlier in the inning.
Cody Kelley (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for DSU. Kelley allowed two runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings of work while tallying eight strikeouts. Brent Hallmark (2) tossed 1 1/3 innings to notch the save.
Colter Millican (1-1) took the loss with 6 2/3 innings of work on the hill. MIllican surrendered three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Josh Varner tossed 1/3 of an inning with a hit and walk and Brandon Anderson completed the contest with the final two innings of the mound. Anderson allowed one run on two hits with a KO.
West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 3 as UWA hosts West Georgia in a non-conference, doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The game will be available via live stats and a live video feed at www.uwaathletics.com.
