LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team opens its 2010 home slate on Saturday, Feb. 5 as UWA (1-0) faces Columbus State in a three-game series. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Live stats for the game will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
UWA has claimed the last five meetings against the Cougars. The win streak dates back to Feb. 4, 2007, a 14-2 loss for the Red and White at CSU. The Red and Blue hold the all-time advantage in the series at 33-24. Since head coach
Gary Rundles arrived in Livingston, the Tigers are 12-13 against Columbus State.
UWA enters the weekend series after battling back to defeat Auburn Montgomery, 4-3, in the Tigers' season opener. The Cougars (1-0) also enter this weekend undefeated after CSU knocked off Gulf South Conference East Division foe West Georgia 14-2 on Wednesday.
At AUM, six Tigers carded hits. Colin McKeen, Brian Simone and Bryan Mason each posted hits at key moments in the game to help lead the rally. McKeen's single drove in
Deon Williams for the game-winning hit. Josh Varner picked up the win as he pitched two innings in relief of UWA starter Moses Munoz. Varner allowed two hits and no runs with a pair of strikeouts in his first appearance of 2010. Brian Burgess logged his 17th career save with one inning on the bump while recording a strikeout.
Eric Weiss and Ryan Lewis provided a majority of the runs for the Cougars against UWG as the duo combined for eight RBI and four runs scored. David Lane notched the victory on the mound for the Red and Blue with five innings on the mound. Lane surrendered two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks in the season opener.
West Alabama completes the weekend series on Sunday as the two teams square off at Tartt Field in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The games will be available via live stats and a video stream at www.uwaathletics.com.
