McCormack Leads UWA to 5-3 Win over Columbus State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A grand slam homerun by Sam McCormack in the seventh inning leads the University of West Alabama baseball team to a 5-3, comeback win over Columbus State.

With two outs and Douglas Frazier aboard, Colin McKeen singled through the left side and was followed by a Brian Simone walk to load the bases. The Bartlett, Tenn.-native sent his second career homerun over the right field wall to put UWA back in front of the Cougars (1-1) 5-3.

Brandon Anderson logged his first win in the Tiger uniform pitching one inning with a walk and strikeout. Brian Burgess tied the career mark for saves as he notched his 18th while pitching the final inning of the contest.

UWA struck first in the outing as McCormack crossed the dish on a throw to first base in the second inning. McCormack finished the affair with two hits, four RBI and two runs scored.

The Red and White's narrow lead held until the Cougars tallied three runs in the top of the seventh. Scoop Pharr reached home on an Alex Montes single to left field to tie the game at 1-all. Jason Rogers then placed CSU on top with a homer to center field that scored Montes.

Brain Satterfield (0-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Red and Blue. Satterfield tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief and surrendered four runs on three hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts.

West Alabama and Columbus State closed out the weekend series on Sunday, Feb. 7 in a doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m. The game will be available via live stats along with a video stream at www.uwaathletics.com.
