Tigers Trek to Valdosta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team returns to Gulf South Conference action on Saturday, Mar. 27 as UWA (16-10) travels to Valdosta State for a weekend series. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CST.

The Blazers are tied with West Florida after the first two weeks of conference action at 2-1. The Red and White sits tied with West Georgia at 1-2 in divisional play. North Alabama and UAH are both in the middle of the pack at 3-3 on the season.

The Tigers swept VSU at Tartt Field last season to improve their record to 15-12 under Head Coach Gary Rundles against their intra-divisional foe. UWA's last trip to Billy Grant Field ended in the Tigers being swept in 2008.

The UWA pitching staff will have to contest with the Blazers offensive prowess. VSU is third in the GSC in batting average (.339) and have a trio of batters ranked in the top 10 in the conference in batting average, led by Brandon Decker's .422 batting clip. Clayton Cain (.421) and Ryan Danbury (.398) round out the batting average leads for the Red and Black. Colter Millican heads the UWA hurlers heading into the weekend set. The Brighton, Tenn.-sophomore is ninth in the conference in ERA with a 3.26. Millican is 4-1 in seven appearances this season with 27 strikeouts, which ranks tied for second on the team with Kasey Nafzger.

The Tiger bats look to return to form as UWA managed just two hits in a 6-2 setback to Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday evening. Brian Simone, who recorded one of UWA's two hits during the midweek, leads the Red and White at the plate with a .348 batting average. The Amherstburg, Ontario-native is first in runs scored (25), third in hits (32) and fourth in RBI (17). The junior outfielder leads the Tigers against VSU's pitching staff which has posted a 4.67 ERA through 32 games. The Blazers ERA is 0.14 points lower than UWA's 4.81.

The series concludes on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. CST first pitch.
