VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Alabama baseball team will try to avoid being swept as the Tigers (16-12, 1-4 Gulf South Conference) dropped a doubleheader to Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon at Billy Grant Field. UWA fell 6-1 in the first game and dropped a 10-4 decision in the night cap.
First pitch on Sunday for the series finale is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN 104.9 FM and www.uwaathletics.com. Live stats will also be available on UWA's official athletic website.
The Tigers posted a total of 13 hits in the two outings, including three homeruns. Kevin Deese recorded the 27th homer of his career, placing him fifth all-time at UWA. The two-run homer in game two was the team-leading, seventh of the season for the Fosters, Ala.-junior. Colin McKeen and
Deon Williams each connected on solo homers.
McKeen's solo dinger in the second inning of game one marked the only score for UWA. VSU answered with three runs in the home of the inning to take the lead and never look back. The Blazers (24-10, 4-1) would add single runs in the third, fourth and seventh to claim the victory.
Colter Millican (4-2) was charged with the loss. The Brighton, Tenn.-native pitched six innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs with three strikeouts and three walks.
In game two, the Red and Black scored in five of its six innings, including seven in the first two innings. Williams homered in the second to put the Tigers on the board and Deese recorded his two-run homer in the sixth. Following its seven run outburst in the first two innings, VSU added a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings en route to the series clinching win. Douglas Frazier added the Tigers only other run of the game with a single through the left side in the seventh to score Williams.
Dom Sapp (3-1) picked up his first loss of the season with two innings of work. The Geneva, N.Y.-native tossed two innings, allowing seven runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk.
