Tigers Fall 11-5 at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of West Alabama baseball team suffered its second sweep of the season, first in Gulf South Conference play, as the Tigers (16-13, 1-5 GSC) fell 11-5 at Valdosta State. The sweep marks the first time UWA has been swept in GSC play since 2008 at VSU (25-10, 5-1 GSC).

Earlier this season, the Red and White were swept by GSC West Division foe Delta State at Tartt Field.

UWA recorded seven hits on the day with three Tigers posting multiple hit efforts. Douglas Frazier, Brian Simone and Colin McKeen each logged two hits in the outing with Jody Morgan picking up the remaining base hit for the Red and White. Simone finished the day with two RBI, the sixth multiple RBI performance of the season for the Amherstburg, Ontario-native.

After UWA tied the game at 2-all in the third inning, the Blazers responded with two, three run innings to open up the contest. Jake Summers broke the deadlock with a leadoff homer in the fourth inning. It marked the first of three homeruns hit on the day by the Red and Black. VSU added two more runs in the frame. The Tigers got a run back in the top of the sixth when Simone scored on a McKeen base hit, but the Blazers answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. UWA again plated a run in the seventh but Jordan Hollis sparked a two-run, seventh with a one out homer. Brandon Decker finished the scoring for the Blazers in the eighth with a leadoff dinger. The Red and White added one more run in the ninth in the loss.

Kasey Nafzger (3-4) took the loss with 3.2 innings on the mound. The Westerville, Ohio-native allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and pair of strikeouts.

West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 31 as UWA hosts Montevallo in a pair of non-conference contests. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The games will be available via live stats and a live video stream at www.uwaathletics.com.
