LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team returns to the diamond on Wednesday, Mar. 31 as the Tigers (16-13) look to snap a four game losing streak when they host Montevallo. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The twinbill will be available via live stats and a video stream at www.uwaathletics.com.
UWA and Montevallo (8-24) faced off earlier this season with the Red and White claiming a 13-9 win over its former Gulf South Conference East Division foe. The win marked the fifth straight over UM. UWA holds the all-time series record at 62-41 and is 21-11 against the Purple and Gold clad Falcons since the arrival of
Gary Rundles in 2001.
The Tigers enter the midweek contest after being swept in conference play by Valdosta State over the weekend. The sweep marks the first time UWA has been swept in GSC play since 2008 at VSU and the second of the season as the Red and White were swept by GSC West Division foe Delta State.
Kevin Deese leads Tigers in RBI (30), doubles (11), triples (3) and homeruns (7). The Fosters, Ala.-native garnered his 27th career homer over the weekend, placing him fifth all-time at UWA. Deese is two homers shy of tying Chance Melvin and Sean Starratt, who are tied for third in homeruns. The junior outfielder's doubles and triples marks are sixth in the GSC and the homerun total is seventh among the conference leaders.
Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala.) leads the Falcons offensively. Daugherty ranks 12th in the Peach Belt Conference in hits with 44 and is tied for ninth in the league in stolen bases with 10.
In the last meeting, UWA pounded out 19 hits with six Tigers posting multiple hit outings. Brian Simone' paced the team with a 4-for-5 day at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored. Sam McCormack and Deese each provided multiple RBI efforts to join Simone as duo each drove in four RBI.
Following the midweek doubleheader, West Alabama returns to action over the weekend as UWA hosts West Florida in a weekend series beginning on Friday, Apr. 2. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with a scheduled twinbill on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. The weekend series will be broadcasted on ESPN 104.9 FM and at www.uwaathletics.com.
