LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team snapped a four game losing streak with a pair of wins over Montevallo on Wednesday afternoon. UWA (18-13) took game one 1-0 and held off the Falcons (8-26) in game two for a 6-5 win.
The Tigers host West Florida this weekend beginning on Friday, Apr. 2 with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch. Friday's action will be a DH, followed by a single game on Saturday. The weekend series will be broadcasted on ESPN 104.9 FM along with being aired at www.uwaathletics.com with live stats and a video stream.
In game one, the Red and White won a defensive struggle as the Tiger pitching staff held the Falcons to five hits. UWA's lone run came in the first inning as Colin McKeen, with bases loaded, scored on a passed ball.
J.B. Black (1-0) pitched a solid six innings in his first win of the Tigers. The Gallion, Ala.-native fanned seven UM batters paired with a walk and four hits allowed. Brian Burgess (7) toed the rubber in the final inning earning his 23rd career save with a strikeout and a hit.
UWA broke a 3-all deadlock with a pair of runs in the fourth inning as Jay Jennings and Clint Alford scored on ground ball outs. After the Purple and Gold added a run in the fifth inning, the Tigers answered with a run in the sixth inning as Dallas Rogers scored on a Brian Simone sacrifice fly to right field. UM managed one more run in the seventh, before dropping the night cap.
Jeremy White (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with four innings on the mound. The Brighton, Tenn.-native allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Moses Munoz (1) pitched an inning in relief to log his first save of the season; allowing one run on a hit with a strikeout and two walks. Josh Varner tossed two innings in relief, surrendering a run on three hits.
