HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of West Alabama baseball team picked up a 2-0 win in a rain short shortened contest at William Carey. The game underwent two rain delays in the third inning and was called in the top of the sixth after the third shower set in, cancelling the game.
UWA improved to 21-15 overall while William Carey fell to 22-21.
Kevin Deese accounted for two of the Red and White's five hits in the game. Jay Jennings, Brian Simone and Jody Morgan each posted a hit.
Deese led off the second inning with a base hit through the right side. After moving to third on a passed ball and wild pitch, Deese scored on a Morgan single to left center. The Tigers plated another in the third as Jennings scored on a Simone single up the middle.
UWA starter JB Black (2-0) received the win with two innings of work on the mound. The Gallion, Ala.-native struck out a pair of Crusader batters and walked in his outing. Moses Munoz and Josh Varner each pitched in relief. Munoz fanned three and allowed two hits in two innings of work while Varner tossed one inning with a hit and a strikeout.
Ian Sharp (1-4) took the loss for WCU with three innings on the bump. The lefty surrendered both Tiger runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference East Division action as UWA hosts North Alabama in a crucial weekend series beginning on Saturday, Apr. 17.
