LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team dropped a 13-7 decision on Sunday afternoon to North Alabama, losing the series 2-1. The Tigers record falls to 22-17 overall and 3-9 in Gulf South Conference action.
UWA jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Brian Simone singled up the middle to score Douglas Frazier. The base hit for Simone would be the first of a team-best, four hits on the day for the Amhertburg, Ontario junior.
UNA (24-20, 6-6 GSC) responded in the second inning with three runs and added two more in the third to take a 5-1 lead. The Red and White narrowed the deficit in the bottom half of the inning as Jay Jennings scored on a Kevin Deese sacrifice fly to left field.
With a 5-2 game through three innings of play, The Purple and Gold added a five spot in the top of the fourth inning. The Tigers answered in the bottom of the frame, matching UNA with five runs of their own. The big blow in the inning came as Deese delivered a three-run, homerun over the right field wall, cutting the deficit to 10-7. The homer, which scored Simone and Jennings, was the eighth of the season for the Fosters, Ala.-junior and his 28th career dinger. Jody Morgan and Dallas Rogers also scored during the inning.
UNA held the three run lead until the eighth when the Lions padded the margin with three runs. Blake Stroth capped the Purple and Gold's inning with a double to left field that plated Ross Parker and Nick McGregor. Josh Cyr scored earlier in the inning on a Tiger throwing miscue.
JB Black (2-1) was saddled with the loss as he was one of five Tiger hurlers to toe the rubber. The senior from Gallion, Ala. allowed five runs on six hits in three innings of work.
Casey Jones (4-0) logged the win in a relief effort for UNA. Jones pitched five innings, allowing two hits and recording three strikeouts. Will Rankin drew the start for the Purple and Gold, logging four innings of work with seven runs allowed on nine hits with two walks.
