Tigers Take Pair from Stillman

LIVINGSTON, Ala.The University of West Alabama closed out its 2010 homestand with a pair of wins over Stillman College on Wednesday afternoon. UWA (24-17) edged out a 3-1 victory in the opening game and then trounced SC 9-0 in the night cap. The sweep avenges a 7-4 loss to SC on Feb. 14.

The Tigers posted single spots in the first and second innings and two more in the third to start the one-sided win. The Red and White then exploded with four runs in the fifth inning. With the bases juiced, Lige Mitchell drew a walk to score Deon Williams. Dallas Rogers then followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Clint Brown for a 6-0 lead. After Mitchell stole second base, Douglas Frazier singled to center, scoring Mitchell and Marc Mahler. UWA added its final run in the sixth inning as Bryan Mason scored on a wild pitch.

Dom Sapp (4-1) recorded the win with three innings on the mound. Sapp struck out two of the nine batters he faced in the start. Josh Varner relieved the Geneva, N.Y.-senior, tossing two innings and helping hold SC hitless. Varner struck out one and walked two in his action. The Blue and Gold logged their first three hits of the game in sixth inning against UWA closer Brian Burgess. The junior surrendered all four of SC's hits in the outing, including one in the seventh. Burgess finished the two inning performance with three strikeouts.

A two RBI, Kevin Deese single through the right side in the sixth inning gave UWA the narrow win, in game two. The hit was the only one for the Fosters, Ala.-junior in the outing as he scored Jay Jennings and Frazier.

Jason Howell (2-0) grabbed the win as he pitched two innings and struck out two. UWA starter JB Black toed the rubber for the first three innings, allowing a hit with three strikeouts and a walk. Clint Alford hurled two innings, yielding SC's lone run on a hit with a KO and walk.

Stillman struck first with a run in the fourth inning as Sean Blair scored on a Tiger miscue. The Red and White answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame as Frazier scored on a SC error.
