CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Alabama baseball team closed out the 2010 season with a pair of wins at West Georgia on Sunday afternoon. UWA (26-17, 5-9 Gulf South Conference) defeated the Wolves 10-5 in the first game and claimed a 9-5 win in the final outing of the twinbill. UWG falls to 13-39 overall, 3-11 in conference play.
The Tigers posted four runs in their first at-bat in the second game and never looked back. Five consecutive base hits led to the four run inning for the Red and White. Colin McKeen started the scoring with a single through to left field. The McKeen single followed back-to-back base knocks from Bryan Mason and Brian Simone. Kevin Deese followed with a single to right that scored Simone. Clint Brown followed with the fifth straight hit, a single up the middle, scoring McKeen. Deese became the final run of the inning as he scored on a Jay Jennings fielder's choice.
UWG answered the Tigers first at-bat with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first. UWA extended its lead to 5-2 in the second inning when McKeen singled to center to score Douglas Frazier. The Wolves again posted two again, this time coming in the third inning but the Red and White responded with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to cruse to the 9-5 win.
Moses Munoz (1-1) picked up the win on the mound with three innings of work in relief of Tigers starter Cory Lopez. Munoz allowed four hits with a walk and strikeout in his relief effort. Lopez tossed two innings, allowing four runs on three hits with four walks and a strikeout. Dom Sapp closed out the outing with two innings on the mound. Sapp gave up just one run with three punch outs in his performance.
In the opener, UWA rallied back from 5-4 down and held the Wolves scoreless the remainder of the way to grab a five run win in the opening game of the series. The Tigers broke it open with three runs in the fifth and added a three spot in the seventh. Marc Mahler drove in the first run with a single to center field that plated Colin McKeen, tying the game at 5-all. The Burr Ridge, Ill.-senior, Mahler, finished the day with four hits, including one of the Red and White's two homeruns on the day. McKeen recorded the first homer in the first inning, putting UWA up 3-0 with his two-run round-tripper.
Dallas Rogers capped the scoring in the fifth inning with a double to right center, scoring Sam McCormack and Mahler. Rogers garnered his third RBI of the day with a single up the middle that scored McCormack. Kevin Deese drove in the final two runs of the day with a single that plated Jay Jennings and Rogers.
Colter Millican (6-3) grabbed the win on the mound. Millican tossed five innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits. JB Black and Jason Howell combined to keep UWG off the board the rest of the way. Black tossed three innings in relief, allowing just one hit. Howell pitched the final inning on the mound, giving up a hit.
