LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama men's basketball team returns to Pruitt Hall on Saturday afternoon for a key contest against Gulf South Conference and in-state rival North Alabama. The Tigers (7-10 overall, 2-2 GSC) enter Saturday's contest coming off a close 70-68 victory at West Georgia.
Ryan Fitch led the charge for the Tigers with 22 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Assisting in the offensive efforts the most were
Alquan Mendenhall with 12 points and
Richard Dixon with 11 points.
Paul Mitchell played a part as well by hitting the final free throw and grabbing a steal late in the game to seal the win for the Red and White. Mitchell was also able to help in scoring by registering nine points.
Leading the Tiger offense is Mendenhall who is averaging 13.7 points per game. Fitch also scores in double figures, chipping in 10 points every contest. Fitch leads the team in rebounds as well with 6.6 grabs per game.
UNA enters Pruitt Hall (9-11, 2-2) coming off a 77-74 home loss against West Georgia which saw the Lions give up a 12-point halftime lead. Ricky Davison and Warrick Mastin guided the offensive efforts of the Lions as Davison scored 20 points and Mastin followed those efforts up with 19 points. The North Alabama defense gave up double digit scoring efforts to four players including Justin Cummings who scored a game-high 21 points.
The Lions are led in scoring by Davison who averages 16.5 points per game. Three other UNA players score in double figures as Beaumant Beasley, Marcus Landry and Mastin all contribute to a strong offense that averages 76.3 points per contest.
UWA returns to action Wednesday as they travel to take on the Valdosta State Blazers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CST. The game will be aired on ESPN 104.9 FM and www.uwaathletics.com along with live stats.
