Woolfolk Guides Tigers Past Martin Methodist, 60-52

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Three players scored in double figures, including junior guard Jared Woolfolk's double-double, as the University of West Alabama men's basketball team powered past Martin Methodist Wednesday evening by a score of 60-52.

With the win, UWA snaps a seven-game losing skid and picks up the team's first victory since a season-opening triumph over Barry College on Nov. 12. The Tigers move to 2-7 on the year, while the Redhawks drop to 9-3.

In a tight game throughout, UWA was forced to overcome an early deficit in the first 20 minutes as both teams struggled from the field. With just over 10 minutes to go before the break, the Tigers had put just five points on the board and trailed 10-5.

The Redhawks would sustain that slim lead, going into halftime with a 24-18 advantage.  Martin Methodist took the lead thanks in large part to 18 Tiger turnovers to go along with a 27 percent shooting performance in the first frame.

Head Coach Mike Newell's squad overcame those first half woes to put together a strong defensive effort through the final minutes. The Tigers fell behind by as much as 11 in the early going, but would go on a 17-6 run to knot the score up at 43-43 with just over eight minutes remaining.

From there, the two teams went back and forth until West Alabama finally put some distance between them and MMC to hang on for the final 60-52 win.

Woolfolk  was pivotal in the success of the Red and White Wednesday evening at Pruitt Hall as he sported a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, forcing five turnovers in 39 minutes played. Meanwhile, Drew Faile added 16 points to go along with Darrion Booker's 13 to help UWA to its second win of the year.

The Tigers now travel to Stephenville, Texas to take on Tarleton State on Monday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. CT.
