LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, Feb. 2 as UWA (8-10, 3-2 Gulf South Conference) visits Valdosta State in the key GSC clash. The GSC contest with the Blazers – who are tied with the Tigers for second in the East Division – is the third in 12 days away from Pruitt Hall for the Red and White. UWA – which has won three of its last four affairs - is 1-1 in the two previous road outings, including a 70-68 victory at West Georgia last Thursday.
The Tigers outlasted North Alabama 68-60 in overtime on Saturday evening to tie the longest win streak of the season for the Red and White. The triumph gave the Tigers their first back-to-back conference wins since the 2008-09 season when UWA downed Montevallo (Feb. 21) and West Florida (Feb. 28).
A trio of Tigers has averaged double figures in the scoring column – led by
Alquan Mendenhall's 13 points.
Richard Dixon sits second on the team during the stretch with 11.3 points per game while also leading the team in rebounds with 5.8 per outing.
Ryan Fitch rounds out the double digit scorers with 10 per game and is tied with
Korielle Beavers and
Paul Mitchell with five rebounds per contest.
VSU (16-5, 3-2 GSC) enters the conference clash having dropped its last outing – an 80-75 loss at West Georgia over the weekend – snapping a two-game win streak. Kevin Harris leads the Red and Black in double figures scoring with 19.2 per game. Billy McShepard paces VSU on the glass with 8.2 rebounds per contest.
The road tilt is the first of two straight for the Red and White. Following the Tigers contest on Wednesday, West Alabama travels to Jackson, Tenn. to face Lambuth University. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
