LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team travels to Georgia Southwestern this weekend for a four-game set with the Hurricanes. The series was slated to start Friday, but due to weather the two squads are now set to play a doubleheader on both Saturday and Sunday. The Tigers enter play with a 1-2 record while GSW sits at 1-3.
First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for noon CST while Sunday's action will get underway at 11 a.m. CST.
UWA was on the verge of taking its first series of the season a week ago, leading throughout much of the rubber match with Columbus State before falling 2-1 in extra innings.
In West Alabama's lone victory in the CSU series, Jeb Huber was sharp on the mound as he tossed seven strong innings in his debut in the Red and White. He surrendered just three hits while striking out five Columbus State batters.
Brian Burgess finished the game off with his 26th career save to place himself alone atop the GSC in career saves.
Offensively the Tigers are being led by Brian Simone and
Ladarrius Cole who both recorded three hits in the season-opening series.
The Hurricanes also opened up the 2011 season on the road, losing three of its four contests at Barry. Michael Coffey paced the GSW offense in that series, collecting seven hits – including a pair of doubles – while also driving in a trio of runs and scoring four times.
Trent Franzango struck out six Barry hitters and allowed just one earned run in the season opener to turn in the best performance on the mound on the weekend for Southwestern, but he received no run support in earning a 3-0 loss.
