LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After a pivotal win at West Florida on Wednesday evening, West Alabama looks to continue its push toward the Gulf South Conference Tournament as UWA (9-13, 4-5 GSC) travels to North Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 19. Tip-off at Flowers Hall is set for 3 p.m. Live stats and audio will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
Both teams enter the contest eyeing berths to the conference tournament in Southaven, Miss. – March 4-6. UWA currently stands fifth in the East Division with UNA in fourth. The top four teams from each division advance to the GSC Tournament.
The Tigers outlasted North Alabama (12-14, 5-5 GSC) earlier this season with a 68-60 overtime win in Pruitt Hall. A victory at UNA will give the Red and White its first season sweep of the Lions since the 1992-93 season.
The win – which snapped a three-game skid - secured the first season sweep of West Florida since the 1996-97 season and also gave the Tigers their first victory in Pensacola since the 2007-08 campaign.
Alquan Mendenhall paced the Red and White with a game-high 25 points as the Pine Hill, Ala. native connected on 57 percent of his shots from behind the arc in the winning effort.
Richard Dixon added 14 points with
Ryan Fitch supplying 11 on the night. Fitch also paced the Tigers on the glass with eight rebounds.
UNA – which has won three of its last four outings - enters the contest coming off a 99-97 overtime win at Lambuth. Ricky Davison leads a quartet of Lions in double figures with 16.7 points per game. Marcus Landry and Beaumont Beasley are hovering around 12 points per contest with Warrick Mastin adding 10.4 points.
Following the contest at UNA, West Alabama returns home for three straight contests. The Tigers open the homestand with a non-conference outing against Oakwood on Monday, Feb. 21. UWA then closes the homestand and the regular season with key outings against West Georgia (Feb. 24) and Valdosta State (Feb. 26).
