UWA Hosts West Georgia and Valdosta State in Crucial Contests

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama men's basketball team wraps up the 2010-11 regular season with a pair of significant Gulf South Conference contests. UWA (10-14, 4-6 GSC) entertains West Georgia on Thursday, Feb. 24. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Live stats, audio and video will be available at www.uwaathletics.com. UWA looks for its first sweep of the Wolves since 1992-93.

The Tigers conclude the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 26, against Valdosta State at 4 p.m. Live stats, video and audio will be available for the Senior Day outing on UWA's official athletic website. The Tigers fell 83-66 in Valdosta earlier this season – extending its skid to the Blazers to eight games.

UWA currently sits in fifth in the GSC East Division one spot behind West Georgia in fourth. Valdosta State ranks second in the division. The top four teams in each division advance to the conference tournament in Southaven, Miss., Mar. 3-6.

West Alabama picked up an 81-51 win over Oakwood University in its final non-conference game of the season on Monday evening. The victory followed a 90-69 loss at North Alabama on Saturday afternoon. The setback to the Lions was the fourth in five games to conference opponents. The lone win during the stretch was a 67-66 decision at West Florida – which snapped a three-game skid.

In conference play this season, UWA has received double figure production from a trio of Tigers. Alquan Mendenhall leads the team with 13.9 points per game. The Pine Hill, Ala., native has found his stride from behind the arc connecting on 56 percent of his shots from the 3-point line. Joining the junior guard in double digits are Richard Dixon and Ryan Fitch. Dixon is averaging 12.4 points per game with Fitch adding 11.1 per outing. Fitch is tied with Korielle Beavers as the leaders in rebounding with 5.5 boards per game. Paul Mitchell sits just behind the duo on the glass with 5.1 rebounds.

The Wolves (14-10, 5-5 GSC) enter Thursday having won four of its last six contests. UWG upset UAH in Carrollton last week, 77-69, before falling 83-66 at Valdosta State. A quartet is averaging double digits scoring for the Red and Blue – led by 15.2 points from Da'Ron Sims. Deion Sims is averaging 12.8 with Justin Cummings supplying 12.1 points per game. Gavin Field rounds out the double figure scorers with 11.3 points an affair. Field and Sims also sit atop the top rebounders for the Wolves with 7.8 and 7.7 boards respectively.

VSU (19-7, 6-4 GSC) has drawn even in its last six outings, but have claimed victories in the last contests with victories over Lambuth and West Georgia. Kevin Harris paces the Blazers in scoring with 18.1 points followed by Tristan Steele's 12.7 points per game. Christian Hunter and Will Alston are averaging 11.8 and 11.1 points respectively. Billy McShepard is the leading rebounder for VSU with 8.5 per game.
