LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Behind the strength of five double figure scorers and a blistering performance from the field, the University of West Alabama men's basketball team kept its quest for a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament alive with an 86-49 victory over West Georgia on Thursday night at Pruitt Hall. UWA improves to 11-14 (5-6 GSC) while the Wolves fall to 14-11 (5-6 GSC).
Alquan Mendenhall led the quintet of players in double digits for the Tigers as he had 18 points on the night.
Richard Dixon scored 16 and grabbed seven rebounds in the dominating effort, while the game's leading rebounder
Ryan Fitch tallied 15 points and cleaned up the glass nine times as he narrowly missed a double-double.
Drew Faile chipped in with 14 and
Trevell Coleman scored 12 to round out the double digit scorers for the Tigers.
UWA shot an impressive 63.5 percent from the field including connecting on 13-of-19 from 3-point range. Both shooting percentages ranked as season-highs for the Red and White. The Tigers also outrebounded the West Georgia side by a 37-28 clip.
The 37-point margin ranks as the largest of the season for the Red and White – surpassing the 30-point victory over Oakwood on Monday evening. The Tigers posted a season-high 58 points in the first half. The point total is the largest by UWA this season.
Deion Sims was the leading scorer for the Wolves with 14 points. Da'Ron Sims and Gavin Field tied for the team lead on the glass with five rebounds each.
The Tigers conclude the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 26, against Valdosta State at 4 p.m. Live stats, video and audio will be available for the Senior Day outing at www.uwaathletics.com. The Tigers fell 83-66 in Valdosta earlier this season.
