LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Looking to rebound from a tough series a weekend ago, the University of West Alabama baseball team will face a stiff test in the form of the nation's No. 1 team when it travels to West Florida for a three-game set this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader is slated to start at 2 p.m., and the weekend series will conclude with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Tigers enter the weekend with a 16-12 (3-5 Gulf South Conference), while UWF boasts an impressive 31-4 (7-1 GSC) mark.
Dropping four of its last six, the Red and White struggled mightily at Valdosta State last weekend, but despite that the Tigers still feature some of the best pitchers in the league.
Jeb Huber and
Taylor Bratton are fourth and seventh in the GSC in ERA, compiling a mark of 1.68 and 2.20, respectively. Huber is also fourth in the conference with .176 batting average against while
Barry Meeks is fifth as opponents have hit just .181 off of him.
Issuing just seven on the season, Bratton is second in the league in fewest walks allowed.
Offensively,
Ladarrius Cole is back on top of the squad with his .363 average at the dish. The junior is hitting .400 over the last 10 games, and he leads the team with 32 runs scored. His impressive season on the bases has continued as well as he now sits at a perfect 14-of-14 in stolen base attempts - the highest total in the GSC among those who have a 1.000 stolen base percentage.
The Argos come into the series ranked tops in the GSC in batting average (.345) and runs scored (282), and their pitching staff is also strong as it has compiled a 2.47 ERA on the season while limiting its opposition to hit just .219.
Riding a 17-game winning sterak, this weekend's hosts have not dropped a contest since losing 3-2 on Mar. 5 at Valdosta State. During the stretch, they have had several impressive performances, including scoring 24 runs against Columbus State while crossing the plate 22 times against Lambuth.
Greg Pron leads the way offensively for the Argos with a .413 average, and Brandon Brewer is also hitting above .400 at .407. With 41 runs driven in, Dustin Lawley also has belted seven homers on the season to lead UWF in both categories.
Among the four regular starters on the mound for West Florida, Ben Hawkins has an 8-0 record to go along with a 0.99 ERA, and Jason Postill has matched the 8-0 mark and has compiled a 1.85 ERA while fanning an impressive 71 batters in 63.1 innings pitched.
