LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team had four players with double-digit kills on the way to a 3-1 volleyball victory over Southern Arkansas Saturday at Pruitt Hall on the UWA campus.
The Tigers ended the regular season with a 12-18 record and its sixth consecutive win over Southern Arkansas. The Lady Mule Riders dropped to 22-11.
“We took care of the ball pretty well today. We hit .244 and had nine blocks and that's usually a pretty good number,” UWA coach Mike Shearer said. “The key to this victory was having four players in double-digit kills, the fact that we weren't just relying on one person.”
UWA won the first set, 25-21, and SAU answered by taking the second, 25-22. The Tigers took the third and fourth sets to clinch the match, 25-22 and 25-23.
Carly Wheling led UWA with 16 kills, followed by
Tazra Pitts with 13,
Chanel Davis with 12 and
Sadie Beam with 11. Pitts recorded a .367 attack percentage, followed by Wheling at .351 and Davis at .346.
Chelsea Payne 49 assists for the Tigers.
Denise DeVine had 21 kills and a .386 attack percentage to lead SAU.
The Tigers open play in the Gulf South Conference Tournament against Christian Brothers. The tournament will be played in Pensacola, Fla. Nov. 16-18.
