LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Looking to rebound off back-to-back Gulf South Conference losses, the University of West Alabama men's basketball team (8-18, 5-8 GSC) faces West Georgia in the squad's regular season finale Saturday in Carrolton, Ga. Opening tip is slated for 3 p.m. CT.
The Tigers enter Saturday's meeting after suffering a tough 81-68 setback to West Florida this past Sunday. Previous to that loss, UWA went down in a tough overtime game at Valdosta State, 76-74.
For the season West Alabama is led by point guard
Steven Samuels and three other players that score in double figures. Samuels leads the squad with a 14.7 points per game average, while
Alquan Mendenhall is a close second on the scoring chart with 12.2 points per outing. Meanwhile,
Ryan Fitch and
Jared Woolfolk are scoring around 11 per game.
The Tigers have seen a resurgence in the post late this season with
Kyle Belcher and
Darrion Booker helping West Alabama establish a presence in the paint. Against West Florida, Belcher scored a career-high 16 points to go along with nine rebounds. For the year, Booker averages 7.8 points per game and is second on the team with 5.2 rebounds per outing.
West Georgia enters Saturday's game after losing two out of their last three. The Wolves are 20-7 overall on the year with a 7-6 record in the Gulf South Conference.
Following Saturday's game, West Alabama heads to Niceville, Fla., for the GSC Tourney. The tournament is scheduled to start next Thursday with the first round of the women's bracket .
