CARROLLTON, Ga. – A 12-2 West Georgia run to close out the first half lifted the Wolves past the University of West Alabama men's basketball team, 75-52, Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum.
With 3:23 remaining in the first period, UWA trailed West Georgia by a score of 25-24 with the Tigers playing impressive basketball in the first 15 minutes. From that point on, UWG was able to put distance between them and the Tigers with a 12-2 run over the final three minutes of the half.
Still only down by 11 at the break, West Alabama entered the final stanza with hopes of upsetting the home standing Wolves. It was not to be, however, as West Georgia took control in the final 20 minutes to take the 75-52 win over the Tigers.
West Alabama was led by a trio of players who each scored in double figures with
Jared Woolfolk leading the way with 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior
Alquan Mendenhall and sophomore
Kyle Belcher each added 11 in 40 minutes of action Saturday.
The Wolves were paced by two15-point efforts from seniors Da'ron Sims and Gavin Field. West Georgia also saw great production from Travis Ellison who scored 16 points on the night.
With the loss, West Alabama moves to 8-19 on the year, 5-9 in the Gulf South Conference. Meanwhile, UWG improves to 21-7, 8-6 in the GSC. UWA will now be the six-seed in the GSC Tournament and will play either West Georgia or West Florida in the first round.
