UWA Men’s Basketball Concludes Season with 62-50 Loss to UWG

NICEVILLE, Fla. – Playing West Georgia for the third time this season, the University of West Alabama men's basketball team fell to the Wolves, 62-50, in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Gulf South Conference Tournament.

With the loss, West Alabama concludes its season with an 8-20 overall record. Meanwhile, West Georgia moves to 22-7 overall and advances to the semifinals to play No. 2 Christian Brothers Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers played a physical 40 minutes of basketball Friday, going against one of the top teams in the GSC. Through the first 20 minutes of action, the teams traded leads six times with the score tied on three occasions in the first half.

West Alabama failed to sustain that play through the final five minutes of the opening period as West Georgia went on a run to end the half up 25-14.

The two teams then went back and forth in the finals 40 minutes of action. The Tigers were unable to claim a lead, however, as UWG narrowly outscored UWA 37-36 in the final period putting the final total at 62-50.

The Tigers outshot West Georgia for the game with a 40 percent clip from the field, while UWG hit 20-of-52 for a 38 percent mark from the field. The difference Friday afternoon came out the three-point line where UWG knocked in five-of-10 compared to West Alabama's two-of-six clip at the arc.

Senior Alquan Mendenhall ended his career at UWA with a scoreless effort, while Kyle Belcher scored a career-high 18 points to go along with four rebounds to lead the Tigers.
