Vitor Gazza sent his team to its first Gulf South Conference Tournament championship match
with two goals in a 2-0 victory over Alabama-Huntsville in the semifinals on Friday.
It is the first post season victory for West Alabama (11-6-1; 7-6-1 GSC) as well as the third victory over Alabama-Huntsville (10-7-1; 8-6) this season; second shutout. The Tigers held the Chargers to two shots on-goal while posting nine.
"We are absolutely buzzing from the result today," said UWA head men's soccer coach
Matthew Thorne. "The boys came out and showed great skill and character for the entire 90 minutes. To make the championship game as a second year program is a great achievement and we are absolutely delighted with the lads."
Gazza went one-on-one with Charger goalkeeper Brent DeSilva in the 42
nd minute to tally his first goal. His second goal came in the 57
th minute on a pass from
Clay Green. Gazza now becomes the Tigers' second leading scorer with nine goals this season; he trails 2013 GSC Player of the Year
Thibault Charmey by one.
UWA starting goalkeeper
Lavares Stone, a 2013 All-GSC second team honoree, improves to 10-3-1 on the season by marking his third shutout. DeSilva marked seven saves but allowed two goals to fall to 2-2.
The Tigers will face the winner of Friday's West Florida and Christian Brothers match. The championship match is set for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Ashton Brosnaham Park.
