Carly Wehling and
Elizabeth Culhane combined for 23 kills as West Alabama defeated Alabama-Huntsville in straight sets Friday at Pruitt Hall Gym.
The Tigers won the first set 25-19 and the second 25-20 before putting the Chargers away with a 26-24 win in the third.
West Alabama won for the second time in its last three outings and improved to 11-15 overall, 4-11 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH dropped to 11-17 and 6-8.
"That was a big win for us tonight, a total team effort," UWA head coach
Jordan Lay said. "That is the kind of win that can spark a fire heading into the conference tournament."
Wehling had 16 assists and
Callie Murphy 15 for the Tigers.
Cynthia Smith contributed 15 digs and
Abby Ames 10.
"I am proud of our players and the way they hung with it," Lay said. "I can't say it enough that this was a total team effort."
Rachel Brugman recorded eight kills to lead UAH, followed by Olivia Bauman with seven. Ashton Baker dished out 20 assists and had 15 digs. Stacey Sargent had 14 digs for the Chargers.
The Tigers play the second of a four-match homestand Sunday against North Alabama. Match time is 1 p.m.
