Stillman Slips By UWA, 75-71

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Stillman edged West Alabama men's basketball in the final two minutes to claim a 75-71 victory over the Tigers Saturday at Birthright Alumni Hall on the Stillman campus.

After trailing 37-32 at the half, West Alabama (3-3) opened the second half with a 12-1 run to take the lead. It was Stillman's (4-6) turn in the final miute of the game, rallying for a 7-2 run to claim the win.

"We gave it away tonight," said UWA head coach Mark Downey. "They were the team that played on the road last night, but we were the ones who played sluggishly.

"We beat them on the glass, but it came down to our lack of preparation in the last couple days," Downey said. "Our leaders haven't been practicing hard, and that kills your team. We deserve what we get, and we didn't deserve the win."

UWA outrebounded Stillman 61-46. Mychael Bestor led the Tigers on the glass on the way to posting his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Jarell Byrd led UWA scoring with 18 points.

Justin Harris and Jeffrey Wherry scored 17 points apiece to lead Stillman scoring. Harris' came off the bench to pace a 30-8 scoring advanrtage by the Stillman reserves.  

West Alabama enters Gulf South Conference play by traveling to Alabama-Huntsville on Dec. 14. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 104.9 and ESPN1049.com.
