UWA Claims First Series in 12th Inning

Box Score

AMERICUS, Ga.Luigi Mendez hit a sacrifice fly to right field to send Matthew Magee home in the top of the 12th inning to beat Georgia Southwestern 4-2 and claim the series 2-1.

“It was a well-played game,” said UWA head coach Gary Rundles.

“We got our runs early off of some mistakes that Georgia Southwestern made, but then they capitalized on some mistakes we made. I was most impressed with how well we kept our composure to finish the game. This is the kind of team I thought we were going to be.”

West Alabama improves to 2-5 after a slow start to its season while Georgia Southwestern falls 2-5.

The Tigers' closing pitcher Jeremy White picked up a win in his first appearance. He did not allow a run and finished with one strikeout in two innings pitched. Ryan Mosely was counted with the loss after giving up the two winning runs in the final inning.

Matthew Magee led in runs with two. Luigi Mendez picked up the game winning RBI. Neal Chambless led the Hurricanes at the plate with four hits and two RBI's.

Mitch Holgate and Matthew Magee recorded the first runs of the day in the top of the fourth inning to lead 2-0. The Hurricanes responded with a Josh Sanders run in the bottom of the inning.

Georgia Southwestern continued to trail the Tigers until the bottom of the eighth when Neal Chambless singled down the left field line to send Michel Coffey home and tie the game at 2-2 heading into the ninth inning.

Both teams remained deadlocked until the top of the 12th inning when Matthew Magee scored on a pop out to right field by Luigi Mendez. Zach Dugas followed up with an insurance run to win game three in the 12th.

The victory earns the Tigers a two game winning streak and marks the first series win of the season.

“It was a great weekend,” said Rundles. “I was a little disappointed in game one, but I think today balanced that out.”

West Alabama will now return to Livingston to open its home season against Montevallo on Feb. 13. Georgia Southwestern will travel to take on Valdosta State on Feb. 13.
