Tigers Drops First GSC Loss To West Georgia

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama suffered its first Gulf South Conference loss of the season to West Georgia 5-1 at Tartt Field on Sunday.

“I thought we played sloppy early in the game,” said UWA head coach Gary Rundles.

“Their pitcher did a good job keeping us off balance offensively and we didn't make the right adjustments to get to him. I thought Barry Meek did well. He did what he needed to do through almost six innings. Each game is different and presents different challenges. Their guy on the mound was just a little bit better than our guys at the plate.”

The loss snaps a six game win streak for the Tigers and drops them to 10-12 on the season; 5-1 in the conference. West Georgia improves to 15-6 overall; 4-2 in the GSC.

Jamie Sexton (4-1) pitched through all nine innings for the Wolves to secure his fourth victory on the mound. Sexton ended with six strikeouts and gave up only one run and seven hits. Barry Meeks (0-2) suffered his second loss of the season after giving up three runs on five hits. Meeks ended five innings with five strikeouts.

West Georgia's third baseman Dustin Brantley led at the plate with two hits and two RBI's in three trips. Designated hitter T.J. Eifert claimed two of the Wolves' five runs. West Alabama's designated hitter Josh Podoris picked up the only Tiger run. Mitch Holgate and DJ Turo both ended with two hits in four trips to the plate.

West Alabama will now travel to Birmingham to face Miles College on Wednesday. The game is set for Noon. West Georgia will travel to take on Georgia College on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
