Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

McDermott’s First Goal Provides Margin of Victory

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Connor McDermott scored his first career goal at the 80:26 mark to lift West Alabama to a 1-0 Gulf South Conference men's soccer victory over Lee Friday at Tiger Stadium.

The victory improved West Alabama to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in GSC play. Lee dropped to 6-3-2 and 1-1-1. The win was the first for UWA over Lee in the young history of the Tiger program.

"That was a great win in a tight game. Lee is a good side and not many teams are going to beat them," UWA head coach Matthew Thorne said. "I thought we worked hard and created more chances than they did."

West Alabama outshot the Flames 13-8, 7-2 in the first half. Tiger goalkeeper Lavares Stone improved to 6-2 with his third shutout of the season, while Lee keeper Tom Halsall dipped to 6-3.

"This was truly a team win and shows we have some quality depth," Thorne said. "That was a fantastic finish by Connor. Once he gets focused there is no stopping him."

West Alabama returns to GSC action Sunday when Shorter visits Tiger Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. Lee continues its road swing at Alabama-Huntsville.
