Tigers Rally Fall Short at Rollins Crossover Challenge

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The University of West Alabama Volleyball team rallied back from two sets down to take Barry into a fifth set but fell short in a 3-2 loss in its second match of the Rollins Crossover Challenge in Warden Arena Friday. The Tigers fell in three sets to Lynn to open the tournament.

West Alabama falls to 7-14 overall. Lynn defeated Christian Brothers 3-2 earlier in the Crossover to improve to 9-8, while Barry swept CBU 3-0 to move to 12-8.    

Barry opened up the first two sets hitting .480 in set one and .294 in the second to win 25-15 and 25-18. While the Tigers fought back to win sets three and four 25-22 and 25-15, Barry secured the win with a 15-7 set five victory.

Kristina Boncheva led Barry with 14 kills followed by Tashalyn Begon with 13. Begon recorded .448 attack percentage.

Three Tigers tallied double-digit kill marks, led by Sadie Beam with 17. Beam compiled a double-double by adding 12 digs. Morgan Ray finished with 12 kills and Briana Sandifer with 10, while Lindsey Ball led with 14 digs.

Lynn took all three sets in the first match 25-20, 25-13 and 25-23. The Fighting Knights posted .229 hitting percentage led by Liga Strautniece with 10 and .333 hitting percentage. UWA combined to hit .141 with Yanesha Johnson and Beam each recording nine kills.

Callie Murphy had 18 assists against Lynn and matched her career best of 34 against Barry. Murphy owns 841 assists through two seasons as a Tiger.

UWA women's volleyball returns to action Saturday in the Crossover tournament as they face Rollins at 10 a.m. and Nova Southeastern at 2 p.m.
