PENSACOLA, Fla. – Defending Gulf South Conference men's soccer champions West Florida edged out West Alabama 2-1 at the UWF Soccer Complex on Sunday.
West Florida improves to fifth place in the GSC standings at 3-2-1; 5-6-2 overall. West Alabama dips to third place at 5-3 in league play and 8-6 overall.
The Argonauts took an early lead in the first two minutes with a goal by Jorge Chirinos. Pablo Paz, who assisted on Chirinos goal, extended the lead to 2-0 with another goal in the 8
th minute on an assist by Chirinos.
The Tigers cut into the lead in the second half with an
Evan Beutler goal in the 61
st minute, assisted by
Vitor Gazza. It's Beutler's third goal of the year; Gazza's fifth assist.
UWF goalkeeper Andre Moreira made three saves to pick up the win and improve to 4-2-2.
Lavares Stone took the loss, despite seven saves, to fall to 6-3.
The Argonauts were 9-of-16 shots on-goal, while the Tigers finished 4-of-6.
West Alabama men's soccer now returns home to take on non-conference opponent Cumberland in Tiger Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m.Â
