Tate Gives Tigers First Win Over West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – West Alabama defender Lauren Tate converted on a penalty kick in the 45th minute to lead women's soccer to 2-1 victory over Gulf South Conference defending champions West Florida at the UWF Soccer Complex on Sunday. It was UWA's first win over the Argonauts in program history.

West Alabama remains at the top of the GSC standings at 7-1-1; 11-2-1 overall. West Florida falls to sixth place at 5-3 in the league, while dropping to 7-5 overall.

Tate's goal was her first game-winner of the season and makes her the sixth Tiger with multiple goals scored this year. Nicki Gears gave the Tigers the lead first with an unassisted goal in the 22nd minute. It was Gear's third goal in three matches; ninth this season. She is one goal away from matching her single season goal high of 10 set in 2012.
Taylor Burkhart put the Argonauts on the board with a goal 25 yards out off of a pass from Hugrun Elvarsdottir in the 61st minute.

Both teams posted four shots on-goal each, while the Tigers claimed more shots 15-9.

UWA goalkeeper Issy Foster made two saves to pick up the win and improve to 9-2-1. Katelyn Burkhart took the loss to fall to 1-2.

West Alabama women's soccer now returns home to take on Peach Belt Conference opponent Montevallo in Tiger Stadium Wednesday at 7 p.m.
