CBU Own Goal Protects UWA's Longest Win Streak

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – An own goal by Christian Brothers University in the 87th minute lifted the University of West Alabama women's soccer team to 1-0 Gulf South Conference victory Sunday and kept the league's longest active win streak alive.

West Alabama has now won nine straight matches to improve to 9-1 overall and sits on top of the GSC standings at 5-0. It is the program's longest win streak in its fourth season of competition, surpassing its previous six match unbeaten run in 2012. Christian Brothers, who entered the match with the conference's second longest win streak of four matches, drops to 8-2 and 4-2.

"Today we battled extremely hard against a top team and the conditions," said UWA head women's soccer coach Graeme Orr. "Our experience was key and I couldn't be more proud of our players for how far they have come in a short time."

The match was a stalemate with both teams totaling eight shots, while the UWA defense with stood nine corner kicks from the Buccaneers. The Tigers won the shot on-goal battle 3-1.

The goal came off of a Mara DeLuca free kick that was headed into the CBU goal by a Buc defender.

UWA goalkeeper Issy Foster made one save to tally her second shutout and improve to 7-1 on the season. Robyn Wade dropped to 7-2 in the net for the Bucs.

Nicki Gears posted two shots on-goal for the Tigers to finish 2-for-5. Katy Morris, Nicola Gibson and Kirsten Reilly each totaled one shot.

West Alabama women's soccer returns home to take on GSC opponent Lee University Friday in Tiger Stadium at 5 p.m. The Flames will enter the match 5-4-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference, having defeated Spring Hill College 4-0 on Sunday and fallen to West Florida 2-1 on Friday.
