McCloud Has Double-Double as UWA Beats Stillman 66-53

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.Britney McCloud scored 23 points and collected 15 rebounds as West Alabama held off a late charge by Stillman to notch a 66-53 women's college basketball victory Wednesday at Birthright Gym.

West Alabama improved to 1-1 with the victory. Stillman dropped to 0-2.

West Alabama got off to a blazing start, converting 10 of its first 13 field goal attempts and led by 22 points with 6:57 left in the half.

UWA allowed Stillman to make just two of its first 28 field goal attempts, including an eight-minute scoring drought midway through in the first half. Stillman hit three three-pointers on four trips to ignite a small rally to cut the UWA advantage to 36-19 at the half.

"We have to find some discipline and somebody to lead this team," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "It's bad when you win and can't get excited about it, but we are going to stay positive.

"We will get better, but its going to take time," Cram said. "With that said, I will take an ugly win over a pretty loss any day."

West Alabama had a drought of its own in the second half, going 11:39 without a field goal between a Jasmine Hampton layup with 17:50 to play and a jumper by Jada Williams with 6:12 left.

Stillman got within nine points on layup by Raven Chislim with 33 seconds to play, but it was too little too late.

"We let them get back in the basketball game because of bad decision making and bad fundamentals," Cram said. "Right now we are having to play two guards in the post and they obviously need more work in there. The good thing is we have four days before our next game to hammer on fundamentals."

West Alabama shot 43 percent (22-51) from the floor and limited Stillman to just 23 percent (18-77) while outrebounding SC 57-45.

Jada Williams was the only other UWA player in double figures, finishing with 12 points. Williams and Sheila Washington both had seven rebounds for UWA.

Angel Mitchell was the only Stillman player in double figures, scoring 27 points. Samantha Thomas had nine rebounds and Joclyn Ramos eight rebounds for SC.

West Alabama hosts Montevallo in the 2014-15 home opener for the Tigers Tuesday at Pruitt Hall Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
