LIVINGSTON, Ala. – North Alabama hit .231 and West Alabama committed 20 attack errors and 10 reception errors to lift the Lions to 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-23) Gulf South Conference volleyball victory Tuesday.
North Alabama, who entered the match ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II South Region Poll, improves to 15-12 overall and 14-6, ranked fourth in the GSC. West Alabama remains seventh in the conference at 7-11; 9-19 overall.
"We didn't come out playing our best game tonight," said UWA Head Volleyball Coach
Jordan Lay.
"We fought hard in set three, but errors cost us in that set too. The story of the year for us has been getting off to a late start and having to play from behind. Down the stretch we have to take care of the ball in extra moments and execute those plays to keep us in the ball game."
Megan Gorey led the Lions with 11 kills, hitting .200, while Natasha Fomina tallied two solo blocks and Ashtyn Kapovich 11 digs on defense.
Lindsey Ball led the Tiger defense that out-dug UNA 52-50 with 21 digs.
Jessica Voyles finished with three block assists.
Yanesha Johnson headed the offense with 10 kills and posted .154 attack percentage.
Liz Woodard followed with eight kills, hitting .471. West Alabama combined to hit .118.
The Tigers can still earn a berth into the conference tournament with two wins in their final two matches. They return to action Thursday to take on Alabama Huntsville in Huntsville, Ala. at 7 p.m. UAH currently sits ahead of UWA in the GSC standings at 9-10.
"It's never a comfortable place to be in, but now we'll have to rely on some help to get into the post season," Lay said. "The challenge for us is this weekend. We have one day to prepare for a tough weekend."
