LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's basketball team posted the most single game points since the 2005-06 season and held Miles College to the fewest points by an opponent this season in a 109-54 victory to open the home season at Pruitt Hall Monday.
The win improves West Alabama to a four game win streak and 4-3 overall. Miles falls to 1-3.
"We are pleased with the fact that we held them," said UWA head coach
Allen Sharpe.
"Entering this game we had a goal of not allowing more than 68 points and we were glad to meet that goal. Things like that keep us on the edge. We didn't have any garbage time and we continued coaching until the end. Even though the score was bad, the game never got sloppy. We are going to score plenty of points; we just have to keep guarding and rebounding."
13 Tigers saw action in the game, all of whom scored. Four Tigers finished with double-figure points, each were able to do so in the first half.
Justin Wright and
Lleon Tillman each netted 18 points, followed by
Charles Eaton 17 points and
Terrance Carroll with 13. Carroll led UWA from behind the 3-point, shooting 3-for-4.
Wright added his first double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. The Tigers combined for 44 boards and held Miles to 29.
Kenric McCants totaled 16 assists, falling just two short of setting a new single game school record.
The Tigers set a new season high shooting, previously set in their last game against LeMoyne-Owen College, with 42-for-68 (61.8 percent) from the field. They went on to complete 18-of-23 (78.3 percent) free throws.
UWA led the Golden Bears in points in the paint 56-14 and bench points 53-25. Miles failed to hit a shot from the 3-point line, shooting 0-for-8 and finished 19-for-56 (33.9 percent) from the field. Albert Peterson led the Golden Bears with 14 points, followed by Hasain Bunnell with 11.
West Alabama men's hoops open Gulf South Conference action on Thursday as they travel to take on Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
"We couldn't ask for a better situation, coming off this game and going into conference play," Sharpe said. "We should have a ton of confidence, especially how we played defensively here tonight. We have to be smart in the next couple of days about practicing and preparing a game plan."
