UWA Women Win Fourth Straight, 50-40, Over Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – The Gulf South Conference's leading defensive team continued its dominance on that end of the floor with a 50-40 women's basketball victory over Mississippi College Thursday at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The win was the fourth straight for West Alabama, now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the GSC. Mississippi College is 4-1 and 0-1.

Allowing opponents to shoot just 30 percent from the floor coming into the game, the Tigers flexed their muscles further by allowing the Lady Choctaws to make just 3-of-23 field goal attempts in the second half on the way to a 20 percent (10-49) night from the floor.

West Alabama shot just 33 percent (17-51) from the field, but turned 25 Lady Choctaw turnovers into 18 points.

"I am proud of the way we are playing right now," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "There were a couple times there in the first half where it could have gotten away from us, but we kept our composure."

UWA has held its last three opponents to 47 points or less and to an average of just 45 points per game during the four game win streak.

Britney McCloud scored 17 points and collected seven rebounds to lead the Tigers in both categories. She has led UWA scoring in each of its five games.

Kelcia Bufkin chipped in 10 points for UWA. Latisha McCullum came off the bench to collect six rebounds and two steals.

"Britney continues to play well. More and more people are going to key on her so she has to continue to get better," Cram said. "Latisha makes the Energizer Bunny look lethargic. She is a bundle of energy learning to play disciplined basketball."

Kristen Sampson was the only Mississippi College player to score in double figures with 10 points. Deizarae McCoy grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Choctaws, who won the battle of the boards 44-43.

"We are 1-0 in the conference and that was our goal coming over here," Cram said. "Now we get to go play the top team in the conference at their place. We are looking forward to seeing how we stack up."

The Tigers travel to Delta State (2-3, 0-1) for a 2 p.m. tip off Saturday. Mississippi College is host to West Georgia Saturday at 2 p.m.
