Free Throws and Post Play Doom Tigers

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama-Huntsville made the most of its trips to the free throw line and its bench play to score a 58-49 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over West Alabama Thursday at Spragins Hall.

UAH converted 17-of-19 free throw attempts and the Charger bench outscored the Tiger reserves 21-4 on the way to its first GSC win of the season.

The Chargers improved to 4-5 overall, 1-2 in the GSC. West Alabama dropped to 4-3 and 1-2.

"This is the game I have been dreading all year," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "The more we play, the more people see our deficiencies in the post game and we were horrible there tonight."

After going on a 5-0 run to start the game, West Alabama went the final 5:40 of the first half without a field goal on the way to trailing 27-18 at the break. Alabama-Huntsville scored 22 of its 27 first-half points in the paint.

UWA put together a 9-3 run to open the second half and cut the Charger lead to three points with 15 minutes left to play, but three pointers on three straight UAH possessions stretched it back out again.

"I was disappointed in our lack of hustle and we weren't there mentally," Cram said. "We made some runs to cut the lead to three of four, but then we would do something stupid to let them stretch the lead back out."

Caroline Dodd scored 14 points and Halle Jarnagin 13 to pace the Alabama-Huntsville attack. Jarnagin had seven rebounds to lead UAH in that category.

Britney McCloud scored 18 points to lead West Alabama scoring for the seventh straight game. Kelcia Bufkin chipped in 14 and Jada Williams 13 for the Tigers. Williams was UWA's leading rebounder with 6.

Neither team shot well from the field, with UAH converting 37 percent (18-48) and UWA making just 34 percent (19-55). While the Chargers missed just two free throws, UWA was 7-of-15 (46 percent) from the free throw line.

The Tigers host North Alabama Sunday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Pruitt Hall Gym on the UWA campus.
