Delta State Snaps UWA Win Streak

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State held off a second-half rally by West Alabama to post a 55-47 Gulf South Conference women's basketball victory over the Tigers Saturday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

Delta State improved to 3-3 overall, 1-1 in the GSC, while snapping a four-game West Alabama winning streak. UWA dropped to 4-2 and 1-1.

Trailing 34-20 at the half, West Alabama went on a 19-3 run to open the second half to get back into a game where the lead changed eight times and was tied nine times.

"We had two bad spots where we lost our composure and turned it over a lot," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We challenged them at the half to play tenacious defense and to focus on four and five minute segments to get the lead back."

Delta State's first field goal in the second half came with 8:40 left to play after UWA had evened the score at 37-37 on a free throw by Jasmine Hampton at 8:51.

"Our defense started us on the runs, but if we could knock down some free throws we could win this one," Cram said. "Give (DSU coach) Craig (Roden) credit. He created a couple of mismatches and made us pay for it."

The Tigers converted just 13-of-26 free throw attempts while outrebounding DSU 43-31 and recording nine steals.

Britney McCloud was the leading scorer for West Alabama for the sixth time in as many games, finishing with 15 points. Kelcia Bufkin chipped in 12 points. Shelia Washington grabbed seven rebounds to lead UWA.

DSU's Chelsey Rhodes scored 24 points, 19 in the first half, to lead all scorers. Rhandi Ball contributed 13 points.

West Alabama takes a break for final exams before traveling to Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday. Delta State travels to Christian Brothers, also on Thursday.
