UWA Men's Hoops Seventh in South Region

INDIANAPOLIS – The second week of NCAA Division II South Region rankings were released today and the West Alabama men's basketball team is ranked seventh.

West Alabama's (15-9, 12-6 Gulf South Conference) upcoming opponent, North Alabama (18-8, 12-6), is the fourth seed after defeating Delta State, 97-89 on Thursday. The Tigers will host the Lions Thursday in Pruitt Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Florida Southern , ranked 12th nationally, retained the top spot in the South Region despite falling to Saint Leo, 76-73, last week. Delta State remained in the No. 2 region spot, followed by Saint Leo.

Fort Valley State and Barry separate UWA and UNA in fifth and sixth place, while Tuskegee, Tampa and Rollins round out the 10 team list in eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.
.
The top eight in the regional rankings make the NCAA tournament, though it is possible for a lower regionally-ranked team to qualify if an automatic berth is won by a team outside of the top eight. The automatic berths are granted to the champions of the three conference tournaments in the South Region – the GSC, the Sunshine State Conference, and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
