Cockrum, Holgate Lift UWA Past Miles

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama got two-out, run-scoring hits from Jack Cockrum and Mitch Holgate in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Miles College, 5-4, in college baseball Thursday at Tartt Field.

The victory improves the Tigers to 11-4. The Golden Bears dropped to 4-6.

With Miles leading 4-3, Daniel Bolte worked MC reliever Justin Langdale for a walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Bolte stole second base and was still there two outs later. Luigi Mendez was intentionally walked to get to Holgate, who doubled down the left field line to chase Bolte. Trey Williamon coaxed a walk to set up Cockrum's game-winning single to right field, scoring Mendez.

Matt Betts (2-0) worked a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the UWA pitching win. He allowed a hit and struck out one. Langdale (0-1), who had caught the first eight innings, took the loss after allowing two runs and two hits in the ninth.

Holgate had three hits and drove in four runs to lead West Alabama, including his second home run of the year, a two-run blast in the third inning. Cockrum was 3-for-3 after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning. Tyler Richburg singled twice and was hit by a pitch in three plate appearances. Mendez tripled and Parker Madden singled for UWA's remaining hits.

Chase Williams had three hits to lead a 10-hit Miles attack. Kevin Harris collected a pair of hits for the Golden Bears.

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play Saturday, continuing its current nine-game homestand by hosting North Alabama in a doubleheader. First pitch is 2 p.m. Miles hosts Lemoyne-Owen in a Saturday doubleheader as well.
