UWA Volleyball Improves to 2-0 in GSC

JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team won its second consecutive match, improving to 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play with a 3-2 victory over Union University Friday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.

The victory improves West Alabama to 2-4 overall. Union drops to 2-4 overall, 0-2 in GSC play.

Union jumped out to a fast start, winning the first set 25-9 before West Alabama rallied to win sets two and three, 25-15 and 26-24, respectively. The Lady Bulldogs came from behind to win the fourth set, 25-20, before the Tigers claimed the match with a 15-11 victory in the fifth.

"We didn't get off to the start that we wanted to, but we were able to get refocused and relax into our style of volleyball," UWA head coach Jordan Lay said. "Union is a good team with lot of young talent, so for us to be able to battle back and win in five shows the heart and determination of this UWA team."

Yanesha Johnson and Briana Sandifer combined for 21 kills to lead the Tigers. Callie Murphy had 21 assists for UWA, but it was the Tiger defense that had Lay smiling following the match. Lindsey Ball had 22 digs and Murphy 15 to pace UWA.

"Our defense was stout. Anytime you rack up 80 digs in a match that says a lot," Lay said. "Yanesha and Brianna were good on the outside and our net players were solid, but our defenders were picking up everything."

Union's Deja Moorer had 24 kills to lead all hitters in the match, while Lydia Wright had 29 assists for the Lady Bulldogs.

"This was a good start to the road trip," Lay said. "We are looking forward to playing at Christian Brothers on Saturday."

The Tigers and the Lady Bucs (2-4, 1-1) play at 1 p.m. at Canale Arena in Memphis. CBU live stats are available at http://www.sidearmstats.com/cbu/wvball/.
