MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Christian Brothers University's Maggie Sorensen, Alexis Gillis and Brinsley Cooper combined for 32 kills to defeat the University of West Alabama volleyball team 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-23) in Gulf South Conference action Saturday at Canale Arena.

The loss drops West Alabama to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the GSC. Christian Brothers improves to 3-4 and 2-1.
Sorensen led with 12 kills, while Cooper compiled .562 attack percentage with 10 kills. Sami Gruse supported the Buccaneer attack with 37 assists, while digging out 13 attacks. Brittany Toney led the defense with 16 digs.
The Bucs hit .225 in the match, edging out the Tigers who posted .183.
Yanesha Johnson totaled 10 kills to lead the Tigers.Â
Callie Murphy had 16 assists for UWA, while
Sadie Beam and
Lindsey Ball tallied 10 digs each. Â
"We definitely showed flashes of good UWA volleyball team today, but we couldn't close the door when it came down to crunch time," said UWA head coach
Jordan Lay.
"CBU is a very good team, more so than ever. We played them tough, hung with them and even led for the majority of the sets today. This is a loss we can learn a lot from and draw motivation from looking ahead. We're not hanging our heads on this one. We will keep our chins high and are motivated to move on to the next one."
