Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

St. Leo Edges UWA, 1-0, in Men’s Soccer

ST. LEO, Fla. – Ninth-ranked St. Leo managed just one goal, but it was enough for the Lions to defeat No. 21 West Alabama, 1-0, Friday in a big NCAA South Region matchup at rain-soaked University Field.

St. Leo improved to 2-0-1 with the victory, while West Alabama dipped to 3-2. The Tigers remain on their Florida road swing, playing at the University of Tampa Sunday at 11 a.m. central time.

"This is a tough one to take," UWA head coach Matthew Thorne said. "We were better in the first half than the second and created some decent chances in the first half."

Bafou Sanogo scored the only goal of the match, his first of the season at 55:43 on an assist from Max Geisthovel.

"It was a tight game in messy conditions with not a lot of chances either way," Thorne said. "They defended well and played the ball very well. They are ranked in the top 10 for a reason."

St. Leo limited West Alabama to just six total shots, while taking 18. The Tigers did not manage a shot on goal. UWA goalkeeper Brad Louis had four saves in the loss, while St. Leo keeper Manuel Schoenhuber was not challenged.

"We are probably on one of the toughest road trips in the history of our program," Thorne said. "Playing No. 10 Young Harris, No. 9 St. Leo and then Tampa back-to-back-to-back, all on the road, is a huge challenge."

After Sunday's match at Tampa, the Tigers return to Tiger Stadium host Delta State on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
