LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Â
Nationally ranked No. 15 West Florida edged out the University of West Alabama women's volleyball team by three points in both the third and fourth sets to keep its winning streak alive with a 3-1 Gulf South Conference victory at Pruitt Hall Tuesday.Â
West Florida (12-0; 6-0 in the GSC) commanded the first set winning 25-14 and took sets three and four 25-22 in both. West Alabama (4-7; 4-3) served the Argonauts their first set loss in three matches in the second set 25-23.
"We definitely gave West Florida a run for their money," said UWA head volleyball coach
Jordan Lay.
"We looked really good sets two through four. In set one, we didn't get off to the greatest start, but we started to find our rhythm at the end and that carried us over. I am really proud of the girls how they maintained their aggressiveness. We had a fantastic crowd tonight. They are so supportive. They give us their energy, and we really couldn't do things without them."
Service errors cost the Tigers early, committing 10 of their 13 in the first two sets, while the Argonauts struggled with 10 blocking errors. UWF ended with an overall .201 attack percentage and UWA totaled .153.
Carol Siqueira spearheaded the attack for West Florida with 14 kills.
Liz Woodard and
Sadie Beam led West Alabama, combining for 21 kills.
Defensively, Siqueira and Sarah Scott each assisted on three blocks for the Argo's. Tori Martella and Holly Mattmuller each totaled 16 digs.
Callie Murphy totaled 24 assists while aiding on defense with 10 digs.
Sadie Beam led the Tiger defense with 13 digs, while
Elizabeth Culhane assisted on five blocks.
West Alabama will remain at home, hosting Miles College on Friday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
"We look forward to getting them Miles on our home court," Lay said. "We are going to continue to stress, when playing at our pace, to be aggressive at the net, to take care of the ball and keep up the little details. If we keep up the little details, we are going to be a very dangerous team the rest of the season."Â Â
