LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team swept Miles College 3-0 at Pruitt Hall Friday. The Tiger's starters controlled the first set 25-7, while nine Tigers came off the bench to win 25-18 in both the second and third sets.
West Alabama improves to 5-7 overall before returning to Gulf South Conference action on Tuesday against North Alabama on the road. Miles fell to 5-12.
"We did what we set out to do and that was get the win," said UWA head volleyball coach
Jordan Lay.
"We got our first rotation in the first set and they took care of business. We thought that gave us an opportunity to work more of the younger girls in, which we did. Miles is a good team who is improving every year. They really made us work for this win, but it was good for our younger girls to get that experience."
Liz Woodard led the UWA's attack with nine kills.
Morgan Ray,
Vic Collins and
Yanesha Johnson all followed with six.
Callie Murphy and
Sam Burgess continued to split time at the setter position, combining for 30 assists.
The defense was a collective effort with nine Tigers completing digs.
Taylor Lybarger led with five.
UWA compiled .348 attack percentage, while the Golden Bears finished with 16 total kills in 60 attempts. 13 of Miles' 21 total points came from West Alabama errors.
The Tigers tip off against the Lions at Flowers Hall at 7 p.m.
"The girls are very hungry to go to UNA this year," Lay said. "We felt like we let them get away last year, and our returners are ready to get them at their house. UNA is a big rivalry for us, but we want to maintain our focus. We need to go into this match with the same mentality we've been competing with in all of our other matches."Â
